Conference & Workshops

In order to give students a unified forum to broaden their understanding of the law, CIJER has been consistently hosting conferences on various legal topics. The goal of the conferences is to provide law students from the South Asian region a platform to network and exchange ideas in pursuit of higher standards in legal education and professional development. Having a working knowledge of one another's legal systems will allow for more productive collaboration in the provision of legal services and the promotion of legislative reforms.

Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon Asian Jural Conclave: Seventh Law Student’s Conference, 2023

Global Jural Conclave, 2023

'Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Global Jural Conclave' is a tribute to the magnificent contribution of Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon in legal field which spans over a great time of three decades. The competition is in its seventh year, which was initiated in the year 2015, as Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon SAARCLAW Mooting Competition and Law Students Conference. The idea of organizing the competition is to provide a platform for law students to show case their abilities and their holistic growth in legal arena.

Eight Law Student’s Conference, 2023

In its seventh Edition the competition was renamed as Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Global Jural Conclave 2021-22. This Jural Conclave was organized by Lloyd Law College with technical support from Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) from 25th to 27th February, 2022 in hybrid mode

The eight edition of the Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon Global Jural Conclave, 2022-23 is being organized by Lloyd Law College with technical support from Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy and Training (MILAT) at Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India from 15th to 18th of February, 2023. India can nominate up to 25 teams for this global event, based on the memorial selection.

The Judicial Colloquium and Law Students’ Conference will be held from 15th to 18th February along with the Global mooting competition at Lloyd Law College.

Judicial Colloquium is a platform for jurists and academia to come together to deliberate upon current issues and challenges in the Constitutional and Public Law domain focusing on the comparative perspective to give insights into the global thinking and strategies to address them.

The idea of the Law Students’ Conference is to provide a forum for interaction and exchange of ideas among the law students from different countries for their excellence in legal education and professional development. Understanding the legal system of each other's country will be mutually beneficial in the context of professional development, trade in legal services and law reform.

“Technology and Future of Law”
Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida 26th – 27th February, 2022

The Law Students' Conference was held from 26th – 27th February, 2022 at Lloyd Law College. It was an exercise aimed at promoting research, writing and presentation skills of law students from Asian countries. In the Student’s Conference, 13 research articles on different sub –themes under "Technology and Future of Law” were presented. The sub themes were:

  • Right to education and digital divide
  • Biotechnology and bio weapons
  • Rights of persons with disability and technological hurdles
  • Artificial intelligence and future of law
  • Territorial partitioning v. borderless internet: jurisdictional issues
  • Genetic engineering and patenting higher life forms- ethical & legal issues
  • Digital governance- structural and managerial issues
  • Technology and administration of justice

The Chief Guest at the Inaugural and Valedictory Function were was Hon’ble Justice Hon'ble Mr. Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Hon'ble Ms. Justice Indira Banerjee, Judge, Supreme Court of India, respectively. “Covid 19 Pandemic: Ethical, Social and Legal Issues.”

The South Asian Law Students Conference was held on 19th to 21st March, 2021at Lloyd Law College. It was an exercise designed at enhancing research writing and presentation skills among the law students from South Asian countries. The conference was attended by 14 teams from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Research papers were submitted by the participants on the theme “Covid 19 Pandemic: Ethical, Social and Legal Issues”. The research paper have been compiled into a compendium of suggestions for presentation to the respective Governments for initiating collaboration in Legal Education in the South Asian Region.

One-Day International Conference On International Humanitarian And Refugee Laws, 2018

The One Day International Conference on the International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws was held in six technical sessions covering the major point of discussion regarding the human rights, the protection of the civilians including children and women, the conditions during the armed- conflicts, the Asian Perspectives, and the enforcement challenges of such laws.

The welcome address was given by Mr. Manohar Thiarani, President Lloyd Law college and Introductory Address was given by Dr. Kavitha Chalakkal (Assistant Director, (Research), Lloyd Law College)

Technical Session I:

It was on the International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, chaired by Prof. M. K. Balachandran. In this session, the presenters covered the various grounds and concepts for explaining the relation of the IHL with the Human rights by discussing about the conventions, and the roles of the humanitarian laws for the protection of the civilians.

Technical Session II:

The second session was on the Protection of Civilians, Prisoners of Wars, Combatants, Women and Children in IHL, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Surinder Kaur Verma. In this session, the presenters covered the various grounds and concepts for explaining the hardships of the civilians as well as the need of the IHL for the protection of various groups.

Technical Session III:

It was on the Law of International and Non- International Armed Conflicts- Refugees and IDPs, chaired by Adv. On Record, Mr. Fuzail Ayyubi. They talked about the ethnic groups and problems relating to the security of the states and the issue of the illegal immigrants.

Technical Session IV:

Was on the Protection of the Natural and Cultural Resources in Armed Conflicts, chaired by Dr. Kishore Dere. In this session, the presenters covered the various grounds and concepts for explaining the affect of the armed conflicts over the natural and the cultural resources.

Technical Session V:

Third session was on the IHL: Asian Perspectives, chaired by Ms. Shreya Maini and Dr. Md. Salim. In this session, the presenters stated the different views on the IHL covering various conventions and weapon as well as refugee laws.

Technical Session VI:

Fourth session was on the International Organisations and Humanitarian law & Enforcement Challenges. In this session, the presenters basically talked about the enforcement challenges of the IHL in India and the affect of Armed Conflicts and Rebel Groups over the world.

South Asian Colloquium On Ethics For Judicial Profession, 2018

Bar Council of Kerala M. K. Nambyar Academy for Continuing Legal Education, Kochi, in association with Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida has organised the South Asian Colloquium on “Ethics for Judicial Professions” in conjunction with Third Prof. N R Madhava Menon SAARCLAW Mooting Competition and Law Student’s Conference 2017-18.

The Welcome Address of the Inaugural Session was given by Padma Shree Prof. N R Madhava Menon, Hon. Director MKN Academy for Continuing Legal Education, Kochi and the Presidential Address was given by Justice T S Thakur, Former Chief Justice of India. Mr. KK Venugopal, Attorney General of India, gave the Inaugural Address and Justice Mohan Peiris, Former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka gave the Keynote Address. The program ended with the Vote of Thanks by Mr. R. Vekatramanai, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.

The colloquium was divided into two session:

The first session was on ‘Code of Conduct for Lawyers: Teaching, Training and Enforcement

The second session was on ‘Conduct for Judges: Teaching, Training and Enforcement.’

Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon started his address by quoting Soli Sorabjee, which talks about ethics for lawyers for professional competence, and further mentioned that the need for such a colloquium is much essential today as there are reports of lawyers shouting at a constitutional bench, there have been investigations against the high court judges, and the independence of the judiciary has been questioned. He said that the time has come when the judiciary is to be protected from the lawyers and judges too. He questioned that are the law teachers responsible for this, are we, teachers, ethical ourselves, and can the ethics be taught. The ethics and guidelines, he said, are in the books, but when lawyers are deviating from the rulebooks then it becomes questionable. The two sessions of colloquium is a small step towards regaining the glory of the legal profession.

Justice Mohan Peiris, Former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka gave the Keynote Address. He said that question of ethical standards of the bar and the understanding of the lawyers is to be considered. And further added, are we imparting the necessary fundamentals as teachers to future lawyers.

'Disaster Management: SAARC Cooperation'

The SAARC Law Students' Conference was held from 17 to 18 February, 2018 at Lloyd Law College. The main aim of conference was to promote research, drafting and presentation skills of the law students from SAARC nations. The conference was participated by 17 teams from India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Research papers were submitted by the presenters on the theme 'Disaster Management: SAARC Cooperation'.

The valedictory function was attended by Padma Shree Prof. N R Madhava Menon, after whom the program is named, Prof. S Siva Kumar, Member, Law Commission of India, Mr. Lalit Bhasin, President, Society of India Law Firms (SILF). Former Chief Justice of India Justice T S Thakur has given the presidential address and the Attorney General of India KK Venugopal has address the inaugural session of the conference.

The Law Students' Conference was held from 10 to 12 February, 2017 at Lloyd Law College. It was an exercise aimed at promoting research, writing and presentation skills of law students from SAARC countries. The conference saw participation from 16 teams from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Total 24 research papers were submitted by the presenters on the theme 'Justice to Indigenous People'.

The Chief Guest of the Inauguration was Hon’ble Justice J.Chelameswar, Judge, Supreme Court of India. The dignitaries from the SAARC nations were Hon’ble Justice K.T.Chitrasiri, Judge, Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, Her Excellency, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Ms. Chitranganee Wagiswara, Political Counsellor, High Commission of Pakistan, Ms. Fozia Manzoor, Mr. Rakesh Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) N.R.Madhava Menon, Mr. Rakesh Munjal, Executive Chairperson, SAARCLAW, Mr. R. Venkatramani, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India were a part of the Inauguration Ceremony. Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Member Law Commission of India and SAARC Mooting Administrator was also present along with Prof Dr. Lisa P. Lukose, GG IP University and National Administrator (India), Ms. Tasrina Noor, from Bangladesh, Former Chair, Port City International University, Chitagong.

CLEA Regional Conference On Freedom Of Speech And Expression, 2016

Law commission of India in association with Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) Asia-India organized CLEA Regional Conference-2016 at Lloyd Law College on the topic `Freedom of Speech and Expression'. The main objective of the conference is to find the rational solution between freedom of speech and expression and reasonable restrictions under the ambit of Constitutionalism and rule of law.

Out of total 268 abstracts received, the screening committee selected 140 abstracts having a genuine and stimulated concern on the theme of conference. A total of 80 papers were presented and total of six Invited Speakers sessions were held, one on each sub theme, along with 10 Main Sessions and 6 Student Sessions.
